1. Who are typical Checkout customers

Checkout is aimed at non-food commercial retail stores that use, or would like to use, a Mac for POS and store management. Customers also typically want bar code scanning, receipt printing, cash drawers, the ability to generate management reports easily and to send the information from Checkout to their accounting system.

The following checklist is a broad guide on who Checkout will work for and who it may not. Contact us for advice specific to your own requirements.

Checkout may be the POS product for you if need any or all of the following:-

  1. a product that requires little or no employee training

  2. a cost-effective solution

  3. the ability to scale-up to more cash registers as your business grows

  4. to scan bar codes to quickly add products to a sale

  5. to sell online

  6. to track products by size and colour or other variations

  7. to record anonymous sales as well as sales to a growing database of customers

  8. an integrated cash drawer, scanner and receipt printer

  9. to print barcodes for your items

  10. accept down-payments or deposits on orders

What doesn’t Checkout do?

  1. multiple shop locations were the information from each site is required to roll-up into one system but it’s fine for multiple locations who are OK with independent information submission from multiple locations

  2. employee tips

  3. gift cards and customer loyalty programs

  4. pole displays and touch screens

  5. multi-currency sales

2. The UK version of Checkout doesn’t come with a chip & pin credit/debit card reader.  What am I missing out on compared to the US product that lets you process credit card payments within Checkout?

Integration obviously has advantages otherwise it wouldn’t have been done in the US but they are not huge and certainly shouldn’t prevent you from purchasing the product.

The only additional keying that’s required with the UK version is that the amount of any card sale needs to be re keyed into the card reader rather than being sent directly from the application. You also have to find your own card service provider if you don’t already have one. Finally, there is the hypothetical question of whether an integrated card service would be cheaper than one you arranged yourself which is impossible to answer!  Please note that the US version’s integration is for credit card only and not debit cards.

3. Checkout and Mac OS 10.7 Lion

Checkout version 3.08 is Lion compatible.
